opsi: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

opsi is an open source client management system for automated device management of Windows, Linux and macOS devices. It supports automatic software distribution, patch management, automated operating system installation (package-based or image-based), configuration management, and hardware and software inventory. The software is developed and supported by uib GmbH of Mainz, Germany, which has been developing opsi for more than twenty years and also offers services, support and training. There is a Community Edition with the core features, a Basic edition and Professional and Enterprise extensions; an opsi Cloud offering also exists.

The open source code is published under the AGPLv3. Parts containing new extensions that are still being co-funded are not open source. opsi can be self-hosted on an organisation's own infrastructure, so data and administration stay under its own control. uib is a German company, and the sources show no foreign parent company. For European organisations, opsi is therefore a self-managed alternative to US cloud tools for client management.

Why digital sovereignty matters with opsi

opsi is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so opsi scores best on data residency.

opsi is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs opsi together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
