The Orfeo ToolBox (OTB) is an open-source software project for remote sensing. It processes high-resolution optical, multispectral and radar images and makes its processing functions available as applications that can be called from Bash, Python or QGIS, as well as through a C++ programming interface. It is intended for users who work with Earth observation imagery and is delivered as software that users install and run themselves.
The project's copyright is held by the French space agency CNES, a government body headquartered in Paris. The software is released under the Apache License 2.0, so any organisation can install, audit and modify it without relying on a vendor-hosted service. There is no cloud component, so the question of where data is hosted does not arise; processing takes place on the user's own infrastructure. For a European organisation this makes OTB a sovereign option for satellite image processing, with the caveat that the project describes itself as community-driven, so maintenance depends on the user's own capacity or on commercial partners.
