PayFit: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

PayFit is payroll and HR software combined with services from payroll specialists. The platform covers payroll, leave, expenses, performance reviews, reporting and an AI assistant. Customers can run payroll themselves or have PayFit's experts handle it. PayFit targets small and medium-sized businesses and offers versions for France, the United Kingdom and Spain, among others. The service is delivered online as a subscription.

PayFit is a French company with an address in Paris; its UK service lists a London address. According to PayFit, customer data and backups are stored in France and replicated across three data centres in France. Amazon Web Services, a US provider, manages the hosting facilities. PayFit states that it is ISO 27001 certified by an independent auditor. The software is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. For European organisations this means that data is located in France while the infrastructure runs on a US cloud provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with PayFit

PayFit is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so PayFit scores best on data residency.

PayFit is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs PayFit together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
