Pix4D: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Pix4D is a Swiss company that makes photogrammetry and drone mapping software. Its range includes PIX4Dmatic for large-scale photogrammetry from drone and terrestrial data, PIX4Dmapper, PIX4Dfields, PIX4Dreact, the PIX4Dengine SDK and PIX4Dcatch for data capture, as well as RTK devices. PIX4Dcloud is the online platform for ground and drone mapping, progress tracking and site documentation. Desktop and mobile tools keep data locally unless the user uploads it through processing in PIX4Dcloud or share-to-cloud.

Pix4D S.A. is based in Prilly, near Lausanne, with offices including Madrid, Berlin, Greenwood (Colorado, US) and Tokyo. Switzerland belongs to EFTA, not the EU. PIX4Dcloud projects are processed and stored in the cluster assigned to the organisation. The default is the US cluster; Germany is the default for European countries, and Switzerland and the United Kingdom have clusters of their own. The cluster can be changed in the organisation settings, but this applies only to datasets created afterwards. Project metadata such as names, creation dates and filenames is stored in the US whichever cluster is chosen.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Pix4D

Pix4D is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Pix4D hosts data in EU, CH, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Pix4D is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Pix4D together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
