Playwright is an open-source framework for web testing and browser automation, developed by Microsoft. With a single API you drive Chromium, Firefox and WebKit on Linux, macOS and Windows, headless or headed. It is available for TypeScript and JavaScript, Python, .NET and Java. Features include auto-waiting, web-first assertions, isolated browser contexts, parallel execution, a test generator, the Trace Viewer and a VS Code extension. An MCP server and a CLI let AI agents drive browsers. Playwright is a library you install yourself; there is no mandatory cloud service.
The licence is Apache-2.0 and the source code is on GitHub in Microsoft's organisation. Because Playwright runs on your own machines or in your own CI, test data and results stay in your environment unless you connect an external service yourself. Microsoft is a US company, but the project can be used without any Microsoft cloud service, and the code can be inspected and forked. For European organisations it is therefore a self-hostable option.
