Private Captcha: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Private Captcha is a CAPTCHA service that blocks bots and spam without puzzles or tracking. The widget requests a challenge from the server and silently solves a cryptographic task in the background (proof-of-work); the difficulty can adapt. Integration uses a widget element with a site key, and official integrations exist for platforms and languages such as WordPress, React, Python and PHP. The service is offered as SaaS and can also be self-hosted.

Private Captcha is developed by Intmaker OÜ, an independent company based in Estonia. According to the vendor, its servers, storage, CDN and email are owned and operated by EU-based companies and data does not leave the EU; EU-only endpoints are offered, and no cookies, tracking or fingerprinting are used. The source code is on GitHub under the PolyForm Noncommercial licence: self-hosting the community edition is permitted for non-commercial use, while commercial use requires a licence. It is therefore source-available rather than open source in the usual sense. For European organisations, this is an EU-based provider with the option of running the service on their own infrastructure.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Private Captcha

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Private Captcha scores best on data residency.

Private Captcha is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.
