Robot Framework: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Robot Framework is an open-source automation framework for test automation and robotic process automation (RPA). Tests are written in a readable, keyword-based plain-text syntax. The framework is extended with libraries written in Python, Java and other languages. Around sixty external libraries exist, such as Browser Library for web testing based on Playwright and AppiumLibrary for Android and iOS. Robot Framework is installed with pip and runs in your own environment and CI pipelines; it is not a hosted service.

The framework is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and developed on GitHub. The Robot Framework Foundation, a non-profit organisation (Robot Framework ry) with a Helsinki, Finland address, funds and supports development through membership fees from member organisations. Because the software is open source and runs entirely on your own infrastructure, no test data has to be sent to a vendor, and there is no dependence on a single commercial supplier. For a European organisation, this makes it straightforward to keep test assets and results under its own control and to inspect the code.
