Salome-Meca: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Salome-Meca is an open-source simulation environment for mechanical and thermal analysis. It combines the SALOME platform, an environment for industrial physics simulation covering CAD modelling, meshing, post-processing and visualisation, with the code_aster finite element solver for mechanics, thermal analysis and dynamics. Engineers and researchers use it to analyse structures and components from geometry through to results. You download and install it yourself; the code_aster source code is hosted on GitLab and downloads are available through code-aster.org.

SALOME is developed by the French organisations EDF and CEA and is licensed under LGPL-2.1 or later; code_aster is open source and carries an EDF copyright notice. Because you run the software on your own systems, your models and results stay with you and no provider hosts your data. That suits organisations that want control over their simulation environment and independence from a commercial vendor, and the open source code avoids vendor lock-in.
