SAP Data Services: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SAP Data Services is SAP's platform for data integration, data quality, data profiling and text data processing. It extracts, transforms, cleanses and loads structured and unstructured data between source and target systems. Typical uses are loading SAP Business Warehouse in batch and data migrations, for example to SAP S/4HANA. It is self-managed server software installed on Windows or UNIX/Linux, not a SaaS service.

SAP Data Services is developed by SAP SE, headquartered in Walldorf, Germany. It grew out of BusinessObjects Data Integrator, which SAP gained when it acquired Business Objects in 2007. Because customers install it on their own servers, data location and operation are under their control. For a European organisation, this combines a European vendor with infrastructure it chooses itself, although hosting on a non-European cloud would still bring that provider's jurisdiction into play.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SAP Data Services

SAP Data Services is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

SAP Data Services runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

SAP Data Services is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SAP Data Services together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
