Scilab is an open-source environment for numerical computation, data visualisation and algorithm development, used by engineers, scientists and students as an alternative to MATLAB. It includes hundreds of mathematical functions, a high-level programming language, 2D and 3D graphics, and the Xcos graphical editor for modelling dynamic systems. Scilab runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and is installed on the user's own computer. It also supports Modelica blocks and the Functional Mock-up Interface for co-simulation.
Scilab was started with the support of Inria, and from 2010 it was developed by Scilab Enterprises, a company that ESI Group acquired in 2017. The operational team later joined Dassault Systèmes, which is listed as the contact on the Scilab website with an address in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France. The software is distributed under the GPL licence, so organisations can inspect and adapt the code and run it on infrastructure they control. The contact entity is established in France, within the European Union.
