SonicWall NetExtender is an SSL VPN client that lets remote users connect to a company network and run applications as if they were on the local network. Users can also upload and download files and mount network drives. The client is installed on Windows or Linux devices and works with SonicWall firewalls, including the TZ, NSa, NSsp and NSv series. It is software for the end-user device; the VPN endpoint is the organisation's own firewall.
SonicWall is headquartered in Milpitas, California, in the United States, and has been backed by the US private equity firm Francisco Partners since 2016. The company is therefore subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. Because VPN traffic terminates on a firewall the organisation operates itself, the data path stays under its own control, and the client is not a hosted service. If you also use cloud-based SonicWall components, check their privacy and data-processing terms separately. European organisations may weigh this US origin against VPN alternatives from the EU.
