SQL-LRS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SQL LRS is a learning record store: a server that receives, stores and serves xAPI statements and their attachments. It implements the xAPI specification, so learning platforms, authoring tools and other applications can send activity data to it. The data can be kept in SQLite, PostgreSQL, MariaDB or MySQL. There is no bundled dashboard: users query the data with SQL from business-intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau or Grafana. SQL LRS is distributed as a Docker image and as source code and runs on your own infrastructure.

SQL LRS is developed by Yet Analytics, Inc., a US company based in Savage, Maryland. The software is open source under the Apache License 2.0 and free to use; the company earns its income from support and complex deployments. Because you host the software yourself, you decide where the data is kept, including inside the EU. The sovereignty question is mainly operational: who administers the database and the server. The code can be inspected and run independently of the vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SQL-LRS

SQL-LRS is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

SQL-LRS hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

SQL-LRS is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SQL-LRS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
