TalentLMS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TalentLMS is a cloud-based learning management system from Epignosis. Businesses use it to train employees, onboard new hires and educate partners or customers, for example in compliance and cybersecurity training. It offers separate training portals for different audiences, mobile access, integrations with other tools, AI features for creating courses and assessments, and a library of ready-made courses; further course content from third-party providers is available as add-ons. It is delivered as software as a service, with no installation required.

Epignosis also makes eFront, TalentCards and TalentHR. According to the vendor's GDPR page, the cloud infrastructure uses Amazon servers with S3 storage and AES-256 encryption, and the service is verified under the EU Cloud Code of Conduct. The page does not name the region where data is stored. The vendor states that it does not use subprocessors that process data in countries without a European Commission adequacy decision. TalentLMS is not open source. A European organisation should ask in writing where its data is stored and review the data processing agreement before use.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TalentLMS

TalentLMS is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

TalentLMS hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

TalentLMS is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TalentLMS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
