TestCafe: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TestCafe is a free, open-source Node.js tool for automated end-to-end testing of web applications. It runs tests in common browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, without WebDriver. Tests are written in JavaScript or TypeScript, or recorded in the browser with the TestCafe Studio desktop app. It handles iframes, multiple windows and concurrent runs, offers a debug mode, a live mode and a quarantine mode for unstable tests, and produces screenshots, videos and reports. It integrates with CI/CD pipelines, and a Docker image is available. Tests can also run on remote browsers from third-party providers such as BrowserStack and LambdaTest.

TestCafe is maintained by DevExpress (Developer Express Inc.); the source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence. The tool runs in your own environment or CI pipeline, and the project describes no first-party hosted service, so test data stays in your infrastructure. If you use remote browser providers, their hosting locations and terms apply. The open-source licence allows self-hosting and independent use, although development depends on a single commercial maintainer.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TestCafe

TestCafe is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

TestCafe hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

TestCafe is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TestCafe together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
