Tyme: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tyme is a time-tracking app for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, for freelancers, self-employed people and teams; a web login is in beta. The app offers parallel timers, Siri Shortcuts, global hotkeys, overviews of projects, budgets and deadlines, statistics, team administration with roles, calendar sync, reminders, location-based clock in and out, and mileage and expense tracking. Data can be exported to PDF, CSV or JSON. Plugins support invoicing with Lexware Office, sevdesk, GrandTotal and WISO MeinBüro.

Tyme is made by Unit Numberfive oHG in Hamburg, Germany. Users who enable sync send timers, projects and time entries to the cloud service they select, Apple iCloud; the developer has no influence on how Apple processes that data. Team data is stored on the Tyme server, which according to the privacy policy is hosted by Host Europe in Strasbourg, France. The software is not open source. European organisations using sync or team features can assess these two data flows separately.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tyme

Tyme is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tyme scores best on data residency.

Tyme is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tyme together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
