Usercentrics: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Usercentrics is a consent and data governance platform. Its products include consent management platforms for websites, mobile apps and connected TV, a privacy policy generator, server-side tracking and an MCP Manager that controls AI access to systems and data. Consent banners can be configured without developer help, and the platform integrates with Google Consent Mode and Google Tag Manager. It covers regulations such as the GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA and TCF v2.4, and several websites can be managed under one account. It is delivered as an online platform.

Usercentrics GmbH is headquartered in Munich, Germany. In 2021 the company combined with Cybot, the maker of Cookiebot. According to its privacy policy, consent data is processed on Google Cloud, provided by Google Cloud EMEA Ltd, with servers in Germany and Belgium. The policy adds that transfers to the US cannot be excluded and mentions possible access by US authorities. The product is proprietary. European organisations should check the processing agreement for hosting and sub-processor details.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Usercentrics

Usercentrics is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Usercentrics scores best on data residency.

Usercentrics is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Usercentrics together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
