Xpert-Timer: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Xpert-Timer is time-tracking software from Germany for freelancers, teams and companies, developed since 1999. The editions cover project time tracking with a timer, manual entries, reports and billing export; multi-user tracking with customers, projects and budget control; and attendance recording with breaks, overtime accounts and vacation management. Optional modules add invoicing, Outlook integration and mobile access. For Pro users, XTCloud adds a browser app, an Android app and a REST API. The programs are installed locally on Windows and are sold under purchase or rental licences.

Xpert-Timer Software is based in Füssen, in the Allgäu region of Bavaria, Germany. According to the vendor, the data stays on your own system or server, and XTCloud runs on your own infrastructure rather than in an external cloud service. Supported databases include MS-SQL, MySQL and MariaDB. For a European organisation this means that data location, access and operation remain under its own control, with no third-party hosting involved. The vendor does not describe the software as open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Xpert-Timer

Xpert-Timer is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Xpert-Timer runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Xpert-Timer is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Xpert-Timer together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
