Yahoo! JAPAN Search: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Yahoo! JAPAN Search (Yahoo!検索) is the Japanese-language search service of Yahoo! JAPAN. Users can search the whole web or limit results to Japanese-language pages. Besides search results the service shows advertising, with settings to opt out of targeted ads.

The service is operated by LY Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. According to LY Corporation's privacy policy, personal data of Japanese users is stored in data centres in Japan and the United States, and data is also passed to processors in various countries. The policy has a separate section for residents of the EEA and the United Kingdom, naming a data protection officer and an EU representative. The service is aimed at the Japanese market. For European organisations, the main point is the transfer of search data to Japan and the US.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Yahoo! JAPAN Search

Yahoo! JAPAN Search is headquartered in JP, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Yahoo! JAPAN Search hosts data outside the EU (OTHER, US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Yahoo! JAPAN Search is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Yahoo! JAPAN Search together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
