Yahoo Search is Yahoo's search engine. It began in 1995 as a search function for the Yahoo Directory, a human-edited web directory, and later used technology from Inktomi and Google, among others. Yahoo developed its own search technology from 2004, but under a 2009 agreement with Microsoft, Yahoo Search uses Bing to generate its results. The service is used through the browser.
Yahoo Inc. is a US company, 90 per cent owned by the investment firm Apollo Global Management, with Verizon holding the remaining 10 per cent. The service is not open source. As a US company, Yahoo falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, and because results come from Bing, Microsoft is involved as well. The sources consulted do not document where search data is processed. For a European organisation, this means queries reach US parties.
