Alfresco is a content, process and governance management platform, now part of Hyland. It offers a content and metadata repository, document management, workflow and process automation, and records management through Alfresco Governance Services, with integrations built on open standards and APIs. Organisations use it to manage enterprise content and content-centric processes. It comes as a Community Edition, open source under the LGPL v3, and as a commercial Enterprise Edition that runs on-premises or in the cloud, plus a multi-tenant SaaS offering.
Alfresco was founded in 2005, acquired by Thomas H. Lee Partners in 2018 and by Hyland Software in 2020. Hyland is headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, so the ultimate parent is a US company, which brings US jurisdiction including the CLOUD Act. Running the software in your own infrastructure keeps hosting and key management in your hands, within the EU if you choose. For the vendor-operated SaaS offering, confirm the hosting regions with Hyland. The Enterprise Edition is proprietary.
