SeedDMS is a free, open-source document management system with a web interface, aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises. Documents are stored in a folder hierarchy and can be searched, including by the text inside them. The system sends notifications about changes and approval requests, generates previews, converts documents to PDF and offers a REST API. SeedDMS runs on your own web server with PHP and MySQL, SQLite3 or PostgreSQL, on Linux, macOS or Windows. There are no limits on the number of users or documents.
The project is led by Uwe Steinmann, an employee of the German company MMK GmbH, which offers support, customisation and hosting for SeedDMS. The software is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2. Because you install and operate SeedDMS yourself, you decide where the documents are stored; there is no mandatory cloud service and no foreign parent company. For European organisations this is a straightforward route to document management under their own control.
