Altair Enterprise: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Altair Enterprise is a web-based computerised maintenance management system (CMMS, known in French as GMAO) from DSD System. It covers preventive and corrective maintenance, stock and purchasing, equipment management, analysis and reporting, human resources, after-sales service, a mobile version, QHSE (quality, health, safety, environment), BIM and 3D, and interfaces to other systems. The vendor stresses that fields, workflows, screens and roles can be customised, and targets maintenance teams in industry, facility management, energy, logistics and other sectors.

DSD System is a French single-shareholder company (SASU) based in Lille. According to the vendor's FAQ, the software is installed on a central server, which the customer can run itself or have hosted in the vendor's private cloud as software as a service, so a self-hosted option exists. The vendor's site does not state in which country that private cloud is located, and it names no parent company, so organisations choosing the hosted option should ask where data is held. The privacy notice for the website names a French host for the site.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Altair Enterprise

Altair Enterprise is headquartered in France and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Altair Enterprise runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Altair Enterprise is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Altair Enterprise together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
