Anubis: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Anubis is an open-source web firewall utility that protects websites and their upstream resources from scraper bots. It places one or more challenges in front of requests, which the software uses to weigh the connection before access is granted. The code is published on GitHub under the MIT licence and is run by the operator of the website on its own infrastructure.

The maintainer, Techaro, presents Anubis on its website as made in Canada and names no separate legal entity or parent company. Because the software is released under an open-source licence, an operator can inspect the code and run it without a vendor cloud service. For a European organisation this means the software itself has no US or other foreign parent named, although the maintainer's support and governance should be assessed separately. Anubis is a self-hosted component rather than a hosted captcha service.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Anubis

Anubis is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Anubis hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Anubis is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Anubis together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
