Apache Kylin is an open-source OLAP engine that describes itself as a high-concurrency, high-performance analytics engine for large volumes of data. It serves as an analytical layer behind business intelligence tools that need interactive queries over big-data sources. The software is distributed under the Apache License 2.0, which permits commercial use, modification and redistribution.
The project is maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit, and its release catalogue lists version 5.0.4 as released on 13 July 2026. Because the software is distributed for organisations to install, the location and operation of any data are determined by whoever deploys it. A European organisation can therefore run it entirely on European infrastructure, while the governance of the project sits with a US foundation and GDPR compliance rests on the deployer's own set-up.
