Apache Pinot: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Apache Pinot is an open-source, distributed OLAP datastore for low-latency, real-time analytics. It was originally built at LinkedIn and Uber and can combine streaming sources such as Apache Kafka, Apache Pulsar and AWS Kinesis with batch sources such as Hadoop, Spark and S3 in the same table. Pinot offers a SQL interface with a query editor and REST API, joins, upserts, a range of index types and multitenancy through logical namespaces, and it scales horizontally. Organisations use it for analytics inside user-facing applications and for real-time operational monitoring. Pinot is installed and operated by the user; the project provides a Helm chart for Kubernetes.

Pinot is a project of the Apache Software Foundation and is released under the Apache License 2.0. There is no vendor hosting your data: where it resides depends on where you choose to run the system, for example in a European data centre. This limits dependence on a single commercial provider. The foundation itself is a US-based non-profit organisation.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Apache Pinot

Apache Pinot is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Apache Pinot scores best on data residency.

Apache Pinot is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Apache Pinot together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
