Planning and EPM (enterprise performance management) software supports budgeting, forecasting, scenario analysis, consolidation and the financial close. Finance teams use it to bring departmental plans together, explain variances and produce statutory and management reporting. Anaplan and Oracle are well-known non-European reference points.
What makes this software distinctive is that it holds more than figures. The calculation models, allocation rules, consolidation logic and approval flows are your financial way of working expressed in code, often in a proprietary formula or modelling language. Switching therefore means rebuilding the model, not migrating a file. Timing matters too: during a quarter or year-end close, an outage or a contract dispute can directly hit reporting deadlines. The Data Act requires cloud service providers not to obstruct switching and to allow data export, but model logic is not automatically covered.
When choosing a European option, look for export of both data and model structure in readable form, calculation logic that can be documented, auditable change trails, and agreements on availability and recovery around close periods. Also check that links to your ERP and general ledger are standard rather than dependent on a proprietary integration layer.
