Planful: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Planful is a cloud platform for financial performance management that connects planning, financial close, consolidation and reporting. Its modules are Plan, Close, Consolidate and Report, used by finance, accounting and operational teams. AI features include an analyst for explainable insights, a planner for forecasts and what-if scenarios, in-app help and a read-only MCP server for querying Planful data from other AI tools. Many connectors link it to source systems, and an add-in works with Microsoft 365. It is delivered as SaaS and was formerly called Host Analytics.

Planful, Inc. lists offices in San Francisco, London, Toronto and Hyderabad, and its privacy policy gives a San Francisco address. The private-equity firm Vector Capital backs the company. The privacy policy states that personal data may be processed in the United States, and Standard Contractual Clauses are available to EU customers through a data processing addendum. In 2021 Planful announced a cloud presence in Europe where EU customers can keep their data within EU borders; the location is not named publicly. The software is proprietary and not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Planful

Planful is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Planful hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Planful is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Planful together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
