Apache Zeppelin is an open-source web notebook for interactive data analytics. Analysts run code blocks in SQL, Scala, Python, R and other languages through pluggable interpreters, such as Spark and JDBC, and combine results with tables, charts and shared documents. It is downloadable software installed on the customer's own servers, for a single user or for several users with LDAP authentication. Typical users are data engineers and analysts who need a shared notebook on top of existing databases.
The Apache Software Foundation, based in the United States, maintains the project under the Apache License 2.0. Zeppelin has no vendor-operated cloud, so the foundation hosts no organisation's data; what matters is where the server runs and which databases its interpreters connect to. For a European organisation, running it on its own infrastructure keeps notebooks and query results under its control; the US seat concerns the project's governance and licence.
