Apache APISIX: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Apache APISIX is an open-source API gateway and AI gateway built on NGINX and etcd. Routes and plugins can be changed dynamically without a restart. APISIX provides load balancing, health checks and circuit breakers, authentication through plugins such as JWT, Key Auth, OpenID Connect and Keycloak, and integrations with observability tools such as Prometheus and OpenTelemetry. Besides HTTP it handles gRPC, WebSocket and MQTT, among others. As an AI gateway it can proxy traffic to LLM providers, with features such as token-based rate limiting. APISIX is software that you run yourself, on bare metal or on Kubernetes.

APISIX is a project of the Apache Software Foundation, a US non-profit corporation headquartered in Delaware, and is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Because the software is open source and self-hosted, you decide where the gateway runs and which traffic passes through it. A European organisation can therefore deploy APISIX on its own or EU-based infrastructure.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Apache APISIX

Apache APISIX is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Apache APISIX scores best on data residency.

Apache APISIX is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Apache APISIX together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
