KrakenD: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

KrakenD is a stateless, high-performance API gateway written in Go. It aggregates data from several backend services into a single response, filters and transforms content between formats such as JSON, XML and SOAP, and applies rate limiting, circuit breaking and authentication with JWT, OAuth2, OpenID, API keys and mutual TLS. It connects to REST, GraphQL, gRPC and messaging systems such as Kafka and RabbitMQ, exports telemetry through OpenTelemetry and is configured declaratively with files that can be kept under version control. More recent additions include an AI gateway with LLM routing, guardrails and an MCP server. KrakenD runs as a single binary or container.

KrakenD is developed by KRAKEND S.L.U., a Spanish company that describes itself as made in Barcelona. The Community Edition is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence; an Enterprise Edition adds governance and security features and 24/7 support. The vendor's site describes self-hosted deployment and mentions no vendor-operated service, so your organisation decides where the gateway runs and in which jurisdiction its traffic is processed, which can be entirely within the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with KrakenD
