ArtFlow: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ArtFlow is an Android app for digital painting and sketching on phones and tablets. It offers a GPU-accelerated paint engine, canvases with up to 50 layers depending on device memory, stylus pressure support, more than 100 brushes and tools, custom brushes from imported images, masks and layer filters. It imports and exports PNG, JPG and PSD files. The app is free to install; a one-time in-app purchase for a Pro licence lifts limits such as the three-layer cap and enables PSD export. It is distributed through Google Play.

ArtFlow is developed by BYTESTORM SOFTWARE (Bartłomiej Janusz), a small developer in Ruda Śląska, Poland, so the company sits inside the EU. The app is not open source. Its Google Play listing states that it contains ads and in-app purchases, and its data safety section says the app may collect personal information and device identifiers and share them with third parties. A European organisation should review the privacy policy before allowing the app on managed devices.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ArtFlow

ArtFlow is headquartered in PL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

ArtFlow runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

ArtFlow is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ArtFlow together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
