GIMP, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a free and open-source raster image editor. It is used for photo retouching and restoration, creative composites, original artwork and graphic design such as icons and interface mock-ups. It offers selection and painting tools, layers and masks, colour management and non-destructive filters, and can be extended with scripts and plug-ins in languages such as Python. GIMP is installed as a desktop application on GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows and is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
GIMP has no parent company or lead organisation. It is built by a distributed community of volunteers, and the GNOME Foundation hosts its source code, bug tracker and translation platform without directing development. Because GIMP runs locally and has no vendor cloud, image data stays on your own systems, and there is no dependency on a single vendor, jurisdiction or subscription. Organisations can inspect, modify and redistribute the software under its open-source licence.
