Krita: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Krita is a free and open-source painting program for digital art and 2D animation. It is a raster graphics editor with an advanced brush engine, brush stabilisers, drawing assistants, layers and masks, colour management and animation tools, using its own KRA working format. Artists, illustrators and comic creators use it as a desktop application on Linux, Windows and macOS; recent versions also run on Android. It is released under the GNU General Public License and owned by its contributors.

Krita started within the KDE community in 1998 and remains part of KDE. Contributors from around the world, many of them volunteers, develop it, and the independent non-profit Krita Foundation, based in Deventer, the Netherlands, raises donations to fund full-time developers. There is no commercial parent company. Because Krita runs locally and has no vendor cloud, artwork stays on your own systems. For European organisations this means an open-source tool with a Dutch foundation behind it and no foreign ownership dependency.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Krita

Krita is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Krita scores best on data residency.

Krita is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Krita together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
