AWS WAF Bot Control and CAPTCHA are features of AWS WAF, the web application firewall from Amazon Web Services. Bot Control is a managed rule group that you add to a web ACL to monitor, block or rate-limit common bot traffic such as scrapers, scanners and crawlers, while allowing known bots. CAPTCHA and Challenge are rule actions: the visitor must solve a puzzle or pass a silent browser check. The features work for applications behind Amazon CloudFront, Application Load Balancer, Amazon API Gateway and AWS AppSync, without extra infrastructure.
AWS WAF is operated by Amazon.com, Inc., a US company headquartered in Seattle, Washington, with no majority shareholder. The service is a SaaS component of AWS, and the customer decides in which AWS Region its data is stored; AWS publishes a GDPR commitment and a data processing addendum with standard contractual clauses. CAPTCHA and bot assessments of your visitors therefore run through a US provider. For a European organisation, US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, remains relevant even when an EU Region is used.
