Azure API Management is a managed Microsoft platform for publishing, securing, governing and scaling APIs, including AI models, MCP servers and agents. It consists of an API gateway (REST, GraphQL, WebSocket, OData), a management plane and a developer portal. The gateway handles authentication, rate limits and quotas, caching, routing and monitoring; the AI gateway adds token limits, cost tracking and semantic caching. Teams can manage their own APIs through workspaces under central governance. The service is hosted by Microsoft in Azure by default and is offered in several tiers.
Azure API Management is a Microsoft product; Microsoft is headquartered in the United States and is subject to US law. You choose the Azure region in which the service runs. You can also run a self-hosted gateway as a Docker container, on premises or in other clouds, while the management plane stays in Azure. The developer portal is open source; the service itself is commercial.
