Azure Data Factory is Microsoft's managed cloud service for ETL, ELT and data integration. Users build pipelines that copy, orchestrate and transform data between cloud sources and on-premises systems. Transformations can be designed visually with mapping data flows, which the service runs on a managed Spark cluster. Triggers, monitoring and CI/CD are supported. Sources inside a private network are reached through a self-hosted integration runtime. Microsoft now points new projects to Data Factory in Microsoft Fabric as the next generation.
Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, and the service is proprietary. Pipelines reside in the Azure region where the data factory was created. For Azure services in general, Microsoft states that it does not store or process customer data outside the customer-specified geography without authorisation, with documented exceptions. Because Microsoft is a US company, the service falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, even when an EU region is used.
