ClauseBase is a Belgian supplier of software for drafting and reviewing legal documents. ClauseBuddy is an AI-powered toolbox that works inside Microsoft Word and Outlook and supports first drafts, review and proofreading, document analysis, clause finding and document comparison. ClauseBase was acquired by LawVu in December 2025 and is being rebranded as LawVu Draft.

ClauseBase is based in Leuven, Belgium. Its new owner, LawVu, is based in Tauranga, New Zealand, which makes for a foreign parent company. According to its security page, production servers run at Hetzner in a German data centre, and backups are stored at Scaleway in Paris and in a second German city; ClauseBase is ISO 27001:2022 certified. The software is not open source. The page does not say where AI processing takes place, so ask about it.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ClauseBase

ClauseBase is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in NZ. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ClauseBase scores best on data residency.

ClauseBase is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ClauseBase together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
