Clonezilla Live: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Clonezilla Live is a bootable system for disk and partition imaging and cloning, used for backing up and restoring a single machine, bare-metal recovery and system deployment. Where possible it copies only used blocks, supports file systems from Linux, Windows, macOS and BSD, works with MBR and GPT and boots on BIOS and UEFI machines. Images can be stored on local disks or on SSH, Samba, NFS or WebDAV servers and can be encrypted. A separate Server Edition (Clonezilla SE) supports multicast for mass deployment. You boot it from a USB stick or disc; nothing needs to be installed.

Clonezilla is free software under the GNU General Public Licence, version 2. It was developed by the Free Software Lab of Taiwan's National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC), together with other developers and contributors. Because it runs entirely from your own boot media and stores images where you choose, your data stays within your own infrastructure; the project describes no hosted service. Its checksum files are signed by the DRBL project.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Clonezilla Live

Clonezilla Live is headquartered in TW, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Clonezilla Live hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Clonezilla Live is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Clonezilla Live together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
