Cloudian: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cloudian provides S3-compatible object storage software for enterprises, and the same platform is also sold as a pre-configured appliance. It can run on a customer's own infrastructure, including on a virtual machine for testing, and the company also lists a managed service called HyperCare. Applications reach the storage through an S3-compatible interface, so existing S3-based tools can be used with it.

Cloudian is headquartered in San Mateo, California, in the United States. Its privacy policy states that information may be stored and processed in any country where the company has facilities, and it names the United States as one of those destinations. Because the software can run on the organisation's own hardware, the data can stay under local control. A managed HyperCare deployment would however need to be checked separately for its hosting location and US jurisdiction. European organisations should compare self-hosting in the EU with any hosted option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cloudian

Cloudian is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Cloudian runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Cloudian is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cloudian together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
