Cohesity: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cohesity is a US company for data protection and data management. Its portfolio includes DataProtect for backup, the Helios management platform, FortKnox, an air-gapped vault within AWS, and disaster recovery as a service. In December 2024 Cohesity completed its acquisition of Veritas Technologies from The Carlyle Group. Customers can deploy on-premises clusters alongside or combined with SaaS services managed through Helios. Since 2021 Cohesity has also offered DataProtect as a backup service in Europe, hosted in AWS data centres in the region, with support for VMware, NAS, Microsoft 365, Amazon RDS and EC2, among others.

Cohesity is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and is privately held. As a US company it is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act, even when data is stored in the EU. Its SaaS services run on AWS, a US cloud provider. For a European organisation it is therefore relevant to consider which region is chosen, who controls the encryption keys and whether on-premises deployment is an option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cohesity

Cohesity is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Cohesity hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Cohesity is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cohesity together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
