Corteza: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Corteza is an open-source low-code platform that positions itself as an alternative to Salesforce. Organisations use it to build web applications and workflows with block-based tools and JavaScript automations, connect data sources and adopt ready-made solutions from a public library, for example for CRM and case management. The platform is cloud-native, runs in Docker containers and can be used either on-premise or in the cloud.

Corteza is licensed under Apache 2.0. It is developed and maintained by Planet Crust, a company based in Cork, Ireland, and the project is owned and operated by the Commons Conservancy Foundation, which the project website says was established under Dutch law. Because the code is open and can be self-hosted, an organisation decides in which region its data is stored and who holds administrative access. Anyone who has a third party host the platform should assess that hosting provider's location separately.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Corteza

Corteza is headquartered in IE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Corteza scores best on data residency.

Corteza is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Corteza together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
