n8n: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

n8n is a workflow automation platform that includes AI capabilities. Technical teams build workflows and AI agents visually, adding JavaScript or Python where needed, and connect hundreds of integrations. You can self-host n8n with Docker, on-premises or in an air-gapped environment, or use it as a managed cloud service.

n8n GmbH is based in Berlin. The code is available on GitHub under the Sustainable Use License, a fair-code licence. It permits use and modification for internal business purposes or non-commercial use, but restricts commercial resale. It is therefore source-available rather than open source in the OSI sense. According to its security page, n8n Cloud runs on Microsoft Azure and data is currently hosted in the European Union; backups are kept in another region of the same country. Self-hosting gives you full control over location and encryption, but also makes you responsible for operations.

Why digital sovereignty matters with n8n

n8n is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so n8n scores best on data residency.

n8n is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs n8n together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
