Mendix: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mendix is a low-code platform for building, running and orchestrating enterprise applications and AI agents. Users can bring their own language models, data and cloud. Applications run in Mendix Cloud, in a customer's own cloud, on-premises or in air-gapped environments. The platform's source code is not open.

Mendix was founded in Rotterdam and has been part of Siemens since 2018; the website names Siemens Industry Software Netherlands B.V. The ultimate parent is therefore in Germany. With Mendix Cloud, the customer chooses the region for data storage: options include Frankfurt and Dublin, alongside regions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan and Singapore. Backups stay within the selected region. Support tickets are stored only in the EU region, while support staff also work from the United States and India without access to application data unless the customer explicitly approves. A European organisation can therefore choose an EU region or its own hosting.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mendix

Mendix is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in DE, also within Europe.

Mendix hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Mendix is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Mendix together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
