Cppcheck is an open-source static analysis tool for C and C++ code. It examines source code without running it, to find bugs and undefined behaviour, and it is designed to handle the non-standard syntax common in embedded projects. The project is licensed under the GNU GPL version 3. Its official packages are maintained by the Cppcheck team on GitHub, and it can be used from the command line or from editor extensions such as the one for Visual Studio Code.
Commercial support and a Premium edition come from Cppcheck Solutions AB, a Swedish company with an office in Stockholm. The Premium edition targets safety and security standards such as MISRA C and CERT C, and the Safety Certified licence carries a TÜV SÜD certificate for functional-safety work. For a European organisation the open-source edition is an alternative to licence-based analysis tools from non-European vendors. Because it runs as a local program, analysis takes place on the organisation's own machines and build servers rather than in a vendor-hosted service.
