DATUS indali: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

DATUS indali is a family of IP PBX systems from DATUS AG: indali S (small), indali M (medium) and indali V, a virtual, fully redundant machine for higher availability requirements. The systems run on the Certified Asterisk Edition and a hardened Linux, support SIP-compliant phones from various manufacturers and offer autoprovisioning, hot desking, ACD queues, pickup groups and a web-based management interface, among other features. Optional extras include linking sites over VPN, CTI integration and central operator positions. The vendor targets banks, insurers, public authorities and business customers.

DATUS AG is headquartered in Aachen, Germany, and was founded in 1970; its website names no foreign parent company. The PBX runs on dedicated hardware or virtually in the customer's own environment, so call and configuration data stays under the organisation's control. The vendor points to the open-source basis of the systems, which it says allows vendor-independent use. The product itself is not open-source software. This lets European organisations run business telephony themselves, without a hosted service from a non-European provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with DATUS indali

DATUS indali is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

DATUS indali runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

DATUS indali is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs DATUS indali together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
