dbt platform: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

dbt platform is the managed cloud service for dbt, the SQL-based approach to transforming data inside a data warehouse. It combines development, orchestration and validation on the dbt Fusion engine, with extensions for editors such as VS Code and Cursor. According to the vendor, dbt never stores customer data; transformations run against the customer's own data warehouse. dbt Core, the open-source framework, is a separate product. The platform is delivered as software as a service.

dbt Labs merged with Fivetran in a transaction that closed on 1 June 2026; the announcement is datelined Oakland, California. The platform is hosted on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, and each account uses a single region. All plans can use the US region on AWS, while Enterprise plans can choose other regions, including Frankfurt on AWS or Google Cloud, Ireland on Azure and London. dbt Labs publishes a data processing addendum that incorporates Standard Contractual Clauses under Irish law. As a US provider, it remains subject to the CLOUD Act even with EU hosting.

Why digital sovereignty matters with dbt platform

dbt platform is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

dbt platform hosts data in US, EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

dbt platform is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs dbt platform together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
