Economize: sovereignty score and 6 European alternatives

Economize is a cloud cost management platform for engineering, finance and FinOps teams. It brings spend from AWS, Google Cloud and Azure into one view, with cost reports, savings recommendations, an explorer across multi-cloud assets, anomaly detection and cost alerts that can be sent to tools such as Slack, Teams and Discord. It is a hosted, self-serve service that connects without an agent, using each provider's billing exports and APIs.

On 30 September 2026 OpenMetal, a private cloud and bare-metal provider, announced that it had acquired Economize, and the Economize website lists an address in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the United States. The site mentions audit logs, role-based access control, SAML single sign-on and SOC 2 compliance, but it does not say where customer data is hosted and does not describe an EU hosting option. Economize is not open source. A European organisation should therefore ask which legal entity processes its billing data and in which region that data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Economize

Economize is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Economize hosts data outside the EU (AWS/Azure/GCP). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Economize is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Economize together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
