EJBCA is an open-source public key infrastructure (PKI) and certificate authority platform for issuing, managing and revoking digital certificates, for example for TLS, client authentication, code signing and IoT devices. The Community Edition is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v2.1 and is available as source code and as container images; an Enterprise edition adds commercial features. It is aimed at system administrators and security teams that run their own certificate authority, including trust service providers. The project was first released in 2001.
The software is maintained by PrimeKey Solutions AB, a Swedish company, which has been part of Keyfactor since June 2021. Keyfactor, Inc. is a US company and is the owner of PrimeKey, so ownership is non-European, even though the code is open source and runs on the customer's own infrastructure. The website does not describe a hosted service for the Community Edition, so data stays on the systems the organisation operates. For a European organisation, the LGPL licence allows audit, modification and self-hosting, while the commercial Enterprise edition is supplied under a separate agreement.
