Emissary-ingress: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Emissary-ingress is an open-source, Kubernetes-native API gateway, Layer 7 load balancer and Kubernetes Ingress, built on Envoy Proxy. You configure it through Kubernetes CRDs or annotations on services and rely on Kubernetes for scaling and resilience. It manages traffic entering a Kubernetes cluster for microservices. Emissary-ingress is self-hosted: you run it in your own cluster, with a cloud or data-centre provider of your choice. The project is released under the Apache-2.0 licence.

Emissary-ingress was formerly known as Ambassador API Gateway. It is a CNCF project at the Incubating level; according to the repository, the original parent company has stepped back from direct involvement, and the project maintains its own governance documents and a list of maintainers. There is no vendor-hosted service: traffic and data remain in the environment where you run it. For a European organisation this means control over location and configuration, and no dependence on a single vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Emissary-ingress

Emissary-ingress is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Emissary-ingress hosts data outside the EU (self-host). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Emissary-ingress is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Emissary-ingress together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
