Encore: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Encore is a backend development platform for TypeScript and Go. Developers declare infrastructure such as databases, Pub/Sub, object storage, caches, cron jobs and secrets in application code, and the same code runs locally with a real Postgres database. On deployment, Encore Cloud provisions the matching services in the customer's own AWS or GCP account. Encore Cloud Hosting is intended for development, previews and small-scale use without SLAs. The open source framework can also build a standalone Docker image for self-hosting.

Encore is operated by Encoretivity AB in Stockholm, Sweden. The framework is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, while the managed platform is a commercial service. Where production data ends up depends on the cloud account and region the customer connects. AWS and GCP are US providers, so an organisation that wants EU-only processing should choose European regions. The documentation does not say where Encore's own control plane runs, which is worth clarifying with the vendor. Self-hosting the Docker image reduces dependence on the managed platform.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Encore

Encore is headquartered in SE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Encore scores best on data residency.

Encore is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Encore together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
